Chapter Eight

“We have to go. Follow me,” Elena urged.

Leslie saw the trail that led up to the exit. Elena gripped his hand. She helped him over the unsteady ground. Leslie felt his eyelids burning and struggled to keep them open.

“I can’t see anything,” Leslie stated. He couldn’t see if Elena had gotten herself under control, but at this point, trusting a Vampire was a little less risky than trusting the cave not to fall in on him.

“Watch your step!” Elena reminded him.

He tripped over a few loose rocks. The crumbling was getting worse, and Leslie’s fading vision wasn’t making his climb any easier. When they reached the top, Elena pulled him through the cave entrance. The sun burned his eyes and made his skin crawl. The thick liquid from the pool appeared to be drying onto him, caking like mud.

Elena screamed as she ducked out of the way of a tumbling boulder. Rocks fell in all directions, forcing them to run in a scattered pattern, Leslie coughing and trying to clear his eyes, even as the goop was turning solid over top of them. His eyes turned to mere slits, and he could make out only lights and shadows as he plowed forward.

The thick sand was difficult to run through. He had been on this planet long enough to be mostly adjusted to the added bounce from the gravity, but living in the ship didn’t allow a lot of time for Leslie to go for a run often. New experiences still felt forced. His ribs protested the sudden burst of exertion. He tried to ignore the terrible taste his lungs were sending up the back of his throat as his large breakfast threatened to make its way back up.

“Oh, god. I can’t do this,” Leslie grunted.

“Yes, you can. You have to! Come on, we don’t have time to stop. I can see the ship just over this hill,” Elena shouted. Leslie didn’t know if he could make it over another sandy hill, but the sound of the large rock structure falling behind him made it clear it was his only choice. She grabbed his arm, slowing the pace, and started to feel around his jacket.

“What?”

“Where are the keys?” Elena demanded. The crumbling canyon was sending clouds of sand their way.

Leslie reached into his pocket but didn’t find them. He checked the other pocket. “Ah, shit.”

“You lost them? Are you kidding me?” Elena groaned. “Fine. I guess I’ll just break in.”

“You better be careful!”

“Oh my god! What is that?” a strange voice called from far away.

“What’s happening? Call someone!” another said.

“Who the hell?” Leslie wondered aloud.

“It looks like people are stopping on the shipway to see why the canyon is flattening. Okay, I got it,” Elena said. She opened the door to the ship and helped to guide Leslie inside. “Where’s your manual overdrive?”

“I turned him off,” Leslie said. “Annoys the hell outta me.”

“What? You’ve been flying without navigations? You do realize that’s a serious offense here.”

“Everything is an offense on Kapaton.
