Chapter Eighteen

‘I like the name Florence,’ says Cheryl, as we prepare for our day out the next morning. ‘If I ever have a little girl, I think that’s what I’ll call her. Not that I can ever see myself having children.’

Cheryl has often talked of how she will never get married and have kids. She says her mother was trapped with five children and never did anything she really enjoyed, so her view of marriage is a little clouded.

‘It makes me think of Florence Nightingale,’ says Emma. ‘Which is nice, because I suppose she was quite an inspirational figure in history. You have to give children’s names a lot of thought. There’s a kid in my mum’s street called Ambrosia. Unfortunately, every time I see her it’s not the food of the gods I think of, though, more tinned rice pudding.’

We breakfast on natural yoghurt, sweet nectarines and juicy strawberries, followed by a thick slice of panettone washed down with some delicious, strong coffee.

‘Right, I’ll just nip to the loo then I’m ready,’ says Cheryl.

A few minutes later we are sitting in the car, heading towards Florence. It’s another gorgeous morning and we’ve set off just before nine o’clock, which means we’ll be able to make the most of the day. I am in the passenger seat next to Cheryl, and Emma is in the back seat with her nose in a pamphlet.

We drive along the twisty roads, admiring the lines of cypress tress standing to attention between the fields, like soldiers on parade on a patchwork green lawn. The windows are open and I can hear the sound of a church bell chiming in the distance.

‘It says here that the best way to see Florence is on foot, as the centre is quite small,’ Emma tells us. ‘There’s still tons to see though. The whole place is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We need to decide exactly what we want to look at.’

‘I suppose Michelangelo’s David is a must. That’s not in the Uffizi Gallery, is it?’

‘No, it’s in the Accademia Gallery, which is a lot smaller. I agree, that’s definitely on our “must see” list.’

‘I was thinking maybe we should jump on the sightseeing bus rather than walking,’ I say, remembering Dad saying it’s the best way to see a place. ‘At least that way we can jump on and off wherever we fancy.’

The girls agree it sounds like a good idea.
