"Tante Mags!" Sal shouted, laughing.
"I can only tell it how it T-I-is!" I laughed, falling on Martitaâs shoulder. She was laughing so hard she had tears in her eyes. My stories and humor brought joy to those young folks.
Tiny was a straightforward type of brother who liked to get to the quick of things. He pulled them up from the roots, straight from the start. He told me he had a woman and kid in Brooklyn, with another on the way. He said he didn't love her, but their relationship was convenient, and she was the mother of his kids, so that was that. Yet, there was a physical attraction between us. It's funny how a man can treat one woman differently from the next. The Grandmother used to say, "A man only loves de woman he's with." I was everything Tiny wanted, and his girl, Yvonne...she was what he had. When I first met her, I noticed the black and blue marks hidden under the makeup on her face. I knew I drove Tiny crazy, and Yvonne probably paid for my waywardness. I wasn't into breaking up families, but Tiny laid something down on me mightier than anything I've ever felt before. He was the air I breathed. My earth, moon, sun, and stars. For years, I flirted around him, and he never touched me. My protection meant more than his desires. He made his intentions clear from the beginning, "We can't tie romance with business. It gets too messy." But I was used to getting my way.
In hindsight, I guess I was something like Diddy. The Grandmother was right. I didn't make it by playing by the rules, either. I loved those times, though, not because they were good but because they were raw. There was always music playing that expressed exactly how you were feeling and what you were going through. The pace of life was slower, people respected one another, and most importantly, I was young, vibrant, and loaded! If you had a dime in your pocket and were ready to hit the jackpot, you were looking for Madame Mary Mags.
Richard and I moved into a penthouse apartment in Graham Court on 7th Avenue between West 116th and 117th Streetâand boy, was it grand. The lobbies had crystal chandeliers and elevators with sliding metal gate doors. An operator turned a big golden wheel to open and close them. Our apartment had several windows facing Central Park, a claw-foot bathtub, and two working fireplaces. We owned sleek modern furniture and collected art and antiques, as The Madame taught me. We were like George and Weezy, baby; we were movin' on up. I had everything I wanted but Tiny. So, being the new Madame, I realized I had to order him to make love to me; otherwise, he wouldn't. He was committed to my safety.
I remember we were coming back from a spring break in Florida. I had started traveling with Poo again. She was maturing into a beautiful young lady with legs that went on for days.
