Cara

The lounge at the King George Cancer Unit had been made as comfortable as the NHS could stretch to, but it was impossible not to feel the usual level of dread on Monday morning at the sight of the high-backed chairs around the walls.

‘Hi, Cara. Good to see you, sweetness. How are you feeling today?’ Angie smiled at her – all the cancer nurses were so kind. Even so, hopefully this would be the last time she saw them.

‘Not too bad at the moment. Although that’s about to change this week, obviously.’

The first week after chemo was the worst. Nausea, headaches, throwing up: like the worst hangover she’d ever had in her life times a hundred. That’s why she’d timed the knock on Jack’s door when she had: it gave her the maximum amount of time while she was feeling well enough to be able to hide what was really going on.

‘We’ll get you hooked up and then I’ll go and make you a cup of tea. Marjorie brought us in a huge tin of biscuits this morning so I’ll bring you some of those too.’ Angie nodded in the direction of an older lady with short white hair, who waved. Her husband was sitting next to her, reading The Guardian. A lot of people had someone come with them at least the first few times. Six hours was a long time to sit in the same place alone.

However nice everyone was, sitting here was probably the most on her own Cara had felt since giving birth to Sophie. She had been alone on the labour ward then, too. Thankfully, Sophie’s birth had been relatively short and uncomplicated. How she would have managed with a C-section recovery, she didn’t know. That was typical Sophie, though. She was the easiest kid in the world.

‘So, give us your hand then.’ The corners of Angie’s eyes crinkled when she smiled, her light blue eyeshadow the same shade as her uniform.

Cara held out an arm and Angie took hold of her hand for the cannula, rubbing above her knuckles with her capable thumbs. The crinkle around her eyes changed to a crease across her forehead. Each time, it got more difficult to find a vein that worked. ‘Hmmm. This one doesn’t look promising. Can I have a look at the other one?’

Cara offered up her right hand. It was amazing how quickly she’d got used to this. Blood tests. Chemo. More blood tests. It wasn’t surprising her poor veins were recoiling inside of her or giving up altogether.

Angie was tapping the side of Cara’s right thumb. ‘I think this might be a good one, although it’ll be a bit awkward. Can you eat biscuits with your other hand?’ She smiled and Cara nodded.

Marjorie’s husband had folded his newspaper and was holding it in front of them both. They must be doing a crossword together. They looked like any middle-aged couple if you squinted one eye so that you couldn’t see the tube connected to her hand.
