Chapter 13

Cora swallowed hard, her heart pounding so fiercely that she felt it might burst from her breast.

“I dinna know why you’re asking me such a thing!” she blurted, panicking. “I’ve made it plain tae you, Gavin, and I dinna know what else you expect me tae say. Must you torment me? King Robert ordered that we seek safe shelter at MacLachlan Castle until I hear from him, and I canna believe my clan will do anything but agree tae what he demands. Ask me then if you wish, but not today!”

Cora clambered onto the floor to stand facing him, the cot between them, Gavin still looking at her so intently that her knees felt weak.

Why did he have to be so handsome?

Why had her clan threatened to kill the only man she had ever loved?

All she wanted to do was rush into his arms and feel again the stirring warmth of his body—but that would alter nothing. She did not dare surrender to the intense longing threatening to overwhelm her. Her only consolation lay in that King Robert clearly hadn’t told Gavin that she loved him, aye, he must have decided that was for her alone to say.

Only when she knew for certain that they wouldn’t be forced apart again, never to see each other, never to touch, never to kiss—

“You’re trembling.”

Gavin’s words husky and low, Cora crossed her arms to hug herself tightly as if that would still what she could not hide from him.

“King Robert and I came tae an agreement, Cora. Would you like tae hear it?”

Her cheeks flushing with warmth, she watched wide-eyed as he moved to the foot of the cot, his expression unreadable. Yet his gaze hadn’t wavered from her, which made her tremble all the more.

All she could do was nod, the slightest smile stirring his lips.

“I’ve been appointed the commander of a fleet of fifteen ships he’s building, along with a castle by the sea and the title of baron—in exchange for my vow that I willna seek vengeance upon your clan. Does that please you, Lady Cora?”

Her mouth must have dropped open for his smile deepened, though it faded quickly when a shadow passed across his face.

“I will never forgive Rory and your kinsmen for tearing us apart, but relinquishing my plans for revenge seems a small sacrifice if I gain everything I hold dear.”

Cora gasped softly at the raw emotion in his voice as he took another step toward her, but then he appeared to reconsider and held his ground.

“You have been at the heart of all I’ve done. . . becoming a guard tae be closer tae you. Becoming a raider after you were taken from me. I thought you were lost tae me forever until I heard that Seoras had been slain, and then I couldna sail north fast enough tae find you.”

“Gavin. . . please,” Cora murmured, his words only making her feel worse, but he shook his head.

“No, Cora, you will hear me. Revenge played no part in my plan tae steal you away from your clan.
