Chapter 19

Roxane

Lying came naturally to me, but to have the person I’m lying about join in… that was a first.

Livio kissed me.

No, it was more than that. It wasn’t simply a kiss, it was… indescribable.

When his lips touched mine, it took me by surprise. But it didn’t take long for my brain to go from, “Mayday, mayday!” to “Oh! That feels nice.”

I wasn’t sure if he had any acting skills, but in my opinion, he had potential. It was like a movie kiss. It was both delicate and passionate at the same time. Something that said, “I hate you as much as I worship you,” but above all, it was serious.

I let out a small appreciative moan, and this took Livio by surprise, but he stopped so suddenly I almost fell over backward. Luckily, my arm was firmly entangled with his, and he caught me.

I saw different emotions flash through his eyes, from panic to embarrassment and even astonishment. It was like he’d just realized what he’d done. Then it all changed, and he gave me one of his stern looks.

Hey! You kissed me, not the other way around!

“Oh! Young love is so sweet,” said Brigitte.

I almost forgot she was there. I smiled with all my teeth and held onto Livio, who’d gone as rigid as a pole, a bit tighter.

“Go on, don’t waste your time on an old mare like me. And Livio, make sure you take some time off work while you’re here.”

He mumbled something unintelligible, and we left the mini-mart. We’d hardly stepped outside when I let go of his arm, and he moved away as if I had leprosy.

Yep, I guess he was just a really good actor during that kiss…

“What exactly was that?” he groaned when we got in the car.

“Excuse me? You’re the one who kissed me, and you’re asking me what I was doing?”

“You wouldn’t stop talking. I had to make you shut up!”

“That’s amazing. Tell me, do you often kiss your colleagues or friends to shut them up?”

He grunted. I got the impression he turned into a bear when he was in a bad mood.

“Your cousin or your aunt, I’m not sure how you’re related to her, came up to talk to me, and she immediately thought we were together. So I just played along. What did you want me to do? Should I have told her I’m only here because a crazed killer was after me, and that if he showed up then and there, you’d start shooting at him between the yogurts and packs of diapers?”

“No, but did you have to elaborate so much?”

“I had to make it believable.”

“There’s a difference between pretending we’re here for a romantic getaway and talking about wedding decorations.”

“We didn’t get to that actually,” I said in a flat tone.

He turned his head to glare on me. If he thought he was scaring me… I couldn’t resist the temptation to push him into a corner. “Plus, she was asking me a lot of questions.”

“A lot of questions?” he asked.
