Chapter Six

Nelith got a cool compress for Khytten and said, “I told you it had a surprise ending.”

Khytten sipped at water. “I didn’t know you were hit with an exploding round.”

“I warned you. You did well with the other stuff.”

“I now understand why you said pain wasn’t an issue.” Khytten gasped. “Holy shit. Will you be my kids’ grandma? I think they need someone tougher than their dad.”

Nelith frowned. “The prefect is the grandmother.”

“Most kids have two sets of grandparents. Father’s and mother’s. We know about Salat’s, but my parents were horrible. I have been in the market for new ones. We will have to see how tall you end up, but you are in the running.”

Salat snorted. “She is trying to collect deadly actives around her. It makes her feel like she doesn’t stand out.”

Khytten muttered, “It also makes me feel secure, dumbass. Nelith, I would offer you status as a godmother, but your age puts you in grandma territory.”

Dmitri snickered.

Nelith smiled. “I don’t mind the reference, but as I have no connection to you aside from being acquainted with Salat, I don’t understand why you would seek a connection.”

Khytten blotted her cheeks. “My family is full of seers. Adopted and by birth. My own daughter is a seer. My daughter told me that I was going to meet her grandmother today. I take that shit very seriously, and everyone else I have seen today is already someone I know. You are the sole new face, you are the right age, and you have need of more family. So, how about it?”

“I would have to meet the children in question. How old is your daughter?”

Salat murmured, “She’s sixteen. Khytten is twenty-nine.”

Khytten smiled. “I just wanted her to live, and because she’s a seer, she knew I would enter her life again. She’s so smart. I am lucky that she grew up as well as she did. Her adoptive family brings her along to visit, though now that she is sixteen, they are letting her travel on her own.”

Salat chuckled. “In a private transport with a dozen monitoring devices.”

Nelith smiled. “So, proud of independence but not stupid.”

Khytten nodded. “Definitely not.”

Kritz came in. “Nelith, do you know what Khytten is offering?”

“Healing to my skin and my genetically idealized height.” She smiled. “It will hurt, and I would like to do it all in one shot if possible.”

Kritz nodded. “Well, you can take it.”

“I need records made so that I can renew my government identification.” She nodded. “There has to be a full set of records for it.”

“Of course. We have done that before.” He smiled.

Khytten smirked. “I have the vials ready.”

Dmitri blinked. “You what?”

“My suit extracts the milk and stores it in canisters against my thighs.”

Salat chuckled and reached for a packet. “Nelith doesn’t like milk.”

Kritz frowned. “What’s that?”

“Chocolate powder.”

Nelith chuckled. “That will work. Strawberry is better.”

Salat opened a different pack on his suit and held up the pink bag. He grinned. “I am always prepared.”

Khytten smiled. “You don’t want to know where he keeps the teddy bear cookies.
