The sun is low in the west as we’re in that hazy period before twilight when everything is calm and the sky is lit up in a mix of brilliant colors. I pull the truck next to Callie’s, feeling a sense of nostalgia as I remember when she lived with me full-time as a young, carefree teenager.

I know she made it back to the ranch earlier this afternoon because Brody joined me about two hours after I left, pissy and fit to be tied by whatever hoops my daughter put him through likely trying to shake her chaperone. I smile despite myself, glad it was him and not me.

Walking into the house, I don’t know what to expect, but I can’t deny feeling a sense of excitement and elation at the prospect of what is coming—at least, after my daughter is asleep.

The sound of the girls’ laughter is good for the soul as I find them in the kitchen, drinking blended margaritas. “Ladies.”

“Hi, Daddy,” Callie sings, her spirits higher than I last saw her. She’s changed from her riding clothes and is wearing a short dress that’s a touch too short for my comfort, but it’s also not my place to say anything since she’s twenty-four, not four. With her hair in long waves down her back and deep-red lipstick, she’s a vision, just like her mother. She also looks more like someone going out for a night on the town instead of a quiet, boring Sunday dinner with her dad.

Everly smiles more shyly back. “Hey.”

I manage to tamp down the guttural grunt that almost slips out as I drink her in. She’s wearing a short denim skirt with a sexy slit up the front that holds all those dangerous curves, and has me wondering if I push her against the counter and slide that skirt up, running my hand over her ass, if I’d find any panties slowing my cock from pushing inside her or if she’d be naked and ready for me. My smile slips off my face. “You did what?” Kalispell might be a hell of a lot closer than Missoula, but with a psychopath out there gunning for Everly, it was a risk I’d rather they didn’t take.
