Thank God Cara was there. He didnât want to dwell on the significance of the song, but he couldnât hide it from his family. They all knew. At least they all knew to back off. Even Mamita had restricted herself to tearful pride. And now he had a distraction to ensure he didnât ruminate on the fact that heâd played one of his songs with his family for the first time â even if that distraction was currently an irritation. Was she flirting with Coque? Of course she wasnât. Cara didnât flirt. Except that sheâd started flirting with him.
Javi watched with a frown as Coque strapped the accordion onto her chest and spent too much time adjusting the straps. He nudged her back so her posture supported the weight of the instrument and leaned close to show her how to open the bellows. When he guided her fingers over the bass keys to produce a C chord, she smiled at him and the cramp in Javiâs chest tightened uncomfortably. Heâd written songs about jealousy before, but never realised it could be just as cutting as heâd described.
He rose restlessly from behind the drumkit, but he had no desire to make small talk with his family, so he grabbed a guitar and fiddled through some improvised bars. He sat on the ground next to Bea, helped her to set up a rhythm on the bongos and continued on the guitar. Whatever they were playing turned into a Beatles song and Bea sang a few lines with a giggle.
âI think Javiâs jealous.â Coqueâs voice reached his ears â which was his brotherâs intention. âHeâs like a puppy sitting down in front of you to get your attention.â
âI donât think so.â Was it disappointment in her voice, or just his wishful thinking? âJavi has so much love that he doesnât get jealous.â
âUyy, lady. You have his number.â
Coque and Bea were both looking at him, expecting a response, but he wouldnât defend himself. Yes, the jealousy was screwing with him, but his attraction to Cara was the same old weakness that she had called him on before: sex, music, fooling around â he wasnât supposed to get them confused any more. He ignored their looks, but glanced at Cara. Her brow was pinched and she was avoiding his gaze.
âWhat do you have to say for yourself, man?â
âNothing,â he shrugged, studying the guitar strings unnecessarily. He played from touch, not sight. âCara knows me well.â
She snorted. âAs if heâd let me know him well.â
He looked up sharply, but she continued to experiment with the accordion as though she hadnât said anything important. From the terrace, Mamita demanded to know what they were talking about. Coque opened his mouth to explain, but Javi silenced him with a look. He turned back to the guitar and struck a chord, strumming a rock music pattern. He looked up at Cara and continued to play.
Her eyes narrowed with suspicion at the familiar chord progression and when he paused and
