That afternoon, Father Michael telephoned the hospital, but was unable to get any information about the groundsman, beyond the fact that his condition was stable. Two hours later, the landline telephone rang in the room that he used as an office. He picked up the receiver.

“St Andrew’s Catholic church.”

“Is – is that Father Kelly?”

It was a female voice that Michael did not recognise. “Yes, I’m Father Michael Kelly, what can I do for you?”

“It’s Caroline Bate, Paul’s wife.”

It was a few moments before Michael made the connection. “Ah, yes, Mrs Bate. How is he?”

“He’s fine, or will be. That’s why I’m calling, to thank you for what you did.”

“No need for thanks. I’m just glad we were able to get help quickly.”

“The doctor said that it made all the difference. They were able to deal with it immediately and he’s going to recover.”

“That’s great news.”

“They said he’s already showing signs that he’ll be OK.”

“Wonderful.”

“He’ll be taking medicines and he’ll have to make some changes, losing a bit of weight and giving up smoking, of course.”

“Good, that’s really good.”

“And he’s a fighter. He wants to get back to work as soon as possible.”

“He’s actually talking?”

“Oh, yes. It’s a bit slurred, you know, and he gets tired, but they said that was normal. He’s recovering, thank God. And thank you, Father. We’re not Catholics but...”

“Mrs Bate, please don’t worry. I’ll pop in to see him when I’m next in the hospital. In the meantime, please tell him how pleased I am and that I’ll be praying for him.”

“Thank you, Father, I will.”
