"We have to think of a good reason for your being here with me," Denise said as she parked the car behind the movie theater on Wednesday evening. She checked her reflection in the rearview mirror and added, "You know, why I brought you along on a date."

Ginny shrugged. "Say anything you want," she said carelessly. "Say I'm depressed and you wanted to cheer me up."

"If that's what you want," Denise said with a grin. She was full of nervous energy, and looked three times in her purse for the car keys after she had locked the car door.

"Now, remember," Denise said. "You're Denise, I'm Ginny. Don't forget and call me Ginny."

"This is so weird," Ginny said. "Why did I agree to this?"

Denise swooped down on her to give her a hug. "Because I asked you to and you're so nice."

"Oh, that's right." Ginny shook her head. It seemed as though all she had done lately was agree to things her better judgment had warned her against. She never should have agreed to meet Mike in the first place, never should have asked Denise to meet him in her place, never should have agreed to meet Mike now and pretend to be Denise. It was insane.

"Now, come on," Denise said, tucking her arm into Ginny's. "He might be here already. I can't wait for you to meet him."

"I can't wait, either. But Denise?" Ginny asked, pausing for a moment. "What if he recognizes my voice?"

Denise waved her hand dismissively. "He won't. He thinks I'm Ginny. It wouldn't be human nature for him to wonder suddenly if we'd switched identities."

"I guess you're right," Ginny said.

When they rounded the corner and came to the front of the theater, Denise grabbed Ginny's wrist tightly. "There he is! Isn't he adorable?"

There was a crowd outside the theater, but Ginny knew Mike right away. She would have known him anywhere. That was Mike, her friend Mike. No—Denise's friend Mike.

It won't be hard at all to pretend I'm depressed, Ginny told herself.

"Hi, Mike," Denise said, her eyes glowing with happiness as they joined him.

"Ginny, hi," Mike said to Denise. Then he glanced at Ginny. "Hi."

Denise put her hand on Ginny's shoulder. "This is Denise," she said. "Do you mind that she came along?"

"No, of course not," Mike said. "How are you?"

"Fine," Ginny answered in a low voice.

"Did we ever meet somewhere before?" Mike asked.

"No, I doubt it," Ginny said quickly.

"You didn't by any chance ever live in Nevada, did you?" Mike went on.

Ginny shook her head. "Well, maybe in a past life," she suggested with a weak smile. "But with my luck, if I'd lived in Nevada, I was probably an armadillo."

Mike laughed. "Hey, I think I've met some of your cousins, then. Do they like garbage?"

"They love it," Ginny said brightly. Mike is just as nice in person as Denise said he was, she thought.

"I knew you two would hit it off," Denise said brightly.

"Ginny told me you go to Big Mesa," Ginny said. "How do you like it?"

"I just moved there, but I think it'll be OK.
