Translations

Moving the graph of a function left, right, up, or down is called a translation. Translations can be described in words (such as “the graph of the function is moved two units up and three units to the left”) or mathematically, as shown below.

Given the graph of a function f(x):

The graph of the function f(x) + c is a translation up or down c units—up if c is positive and down if c is negative.

The graph of the function f(x + c) is a translation left or right c units—left if c is positive and right if c is negative. Note that this is the opposite of what you might expect!

EXAMPLE

Given the graph of the function below, sketch the graph of f(x) + 1, f(x) − 1, f(x + 1), and f(x − 1).
