8 Exponents and Exponential Functions
MUST KNOW
The rules for combining terms in exponential form reduces multiplication and division to addition and subtraction.
Knowing and applying the rules for the properties of exponents enables us to answer questions about phenomena such as compound interest, population growth, and radioactive decay that can be modeled with exponential functions.
Albert Einstein was once quoted as saying, “Compound interest is the most powerful force in the universe.” As we watch the impact of the borrowing and lending habits across the globe, it is hard to argue with him. Compound interest is just one example for the use of exponential functions. In this chapter, we’ll take a look at the rules governing exponents and also look at a few other applications of exponential functions.
