There is a deep connection between the Emerald Isle and mushroom folklore dating back to the ancient Druids. Like other ancient civilizations, the Irish said mushrooms were the “flesh of the gods” and were consumed by the Druids for their psychoactive affects. Because both the liberty cap and fly agaric species are native to Ireland, they were used by Druids to reach transformation and enlightenment. But their significance doesn’t end there. Halloween, or Samhain, has Celtic roots, and is said to be the night when the veil between the dead and the living is at its thinnest. It was custom to dress as animals and monsters to keep the evil spirits at bay, including mischievous fairies. Being that both liberty cap and fly agaric are naturally grown in the autumn months, it is believed that the Druids consumed these mushrooms to see the fairies they feared. Similarly, for other ritualistic rites, Druids would consume these mushrooms at other points in time before sitting in a sweat house to see elves, fae, and leprechauns, should they need enlightenment. In Gaelic slang, mushrooms and fairies share the same word: pookies.
