Twenty

The following day, Flora closed the door of the All’s Well at twelve o’clock, and walked outside to find Jack parked a little way up the main street.

‘We’ll have to miss lunch,’ she warned, climbing cautiously into the passenger seat. A good part of her body still hurt, but she was determined to ignore the discomfort. Jack seemed to take the hint, careful not to ask how she was feeling.

‘The golf club is sure to have a bar. They may even do a ham sandwich,’ he said teasingly.

He was looking younger today, she noticed, the furrows on his face less deep and the ever-changeful grey eyes animated. It was as though for a long time he’d shouldered a burden he hadn’t realised he’d been carrying.

‘I’m not certain the bar serves food.’ She thought about it for a while. ‘In fact, I’m not certain they allow non-members into the club at all. Guests probably have to be invited.’

‘I’ll get ready to be thrown out then.’

‘If we walk in confidently enough, I’m sure we won’t be challenged. We’ll go straight to the bar, find Evelyn, and pretend we’re her guests.’

‘If she’s in the bar.’ Jack sounded gloomy. ‘More than likely, she’ll be miles away in some bunker or other.’

‘You obviously know a lot about golf.’

‘About as much as you,’ he retorted.

Leaving him to park the car, Flora began to make her way to the club entrance, but just before the flight of steps up to the glass doors, she stopped at a car parked awkwardly across two bays. Looking more closely, she saw it had a deep dent on one of the wheel arches and scratched paintwork along the driver’s door.

‘Jack,’ she called to him. ‘See what I’ve found.’

‘A car,’ he said, walking towards her, ‘and in a car park. Something to think about.’

‘I’m serious! It’s a car with a large dent and bad scratch marks down one side.’

He bent down to get a better view. ‘You think this might be—’

‘It has to be. It was a member of the golf club who nearly killed me!’

‘It could be coincidence. There are accidents all the time.’

She shook her head. ‘The car was dark green and so is this. That would be too much of a coincidence.’

Jack pushed back a strand of hair from his forehead and grimaced. ‘Even if it is, we can’t discover the owner. We’d have to ask whoever’s in charge of this place for their list of registrations and, if we do that, we’ll be shown up as intruders. It looks like we’re scuppered.’

‘We’ll just have to keep our eyes open.’

The bar was easy to find, a large space that opened out to the right of the entrance, and though a quick scan told Flora that Evelyn wasn’t there, Raymond Parsons was. He was serving drinks and Flora went straight over to him.

‘Hello, Raymond.’ She saw a scared expression pass across his face. Now why was that? ‘I’m looking for Mrs Barnes. Do you know if she’s at the club today?’

If anything, Raymond’s expression became more furtive.
