Felicity Betigny Takes the Stand

Felicity lived in New York City and was Jean’s aunt and sister of his mother. She testified that her sister had been a sweet, educated, beautiful girl who was a fantastic musician and singer. Her sister Sally became pregnant and lost all her vivaciousness. Her looks and demeanor faded, and she would not speak to anybody for an entire week. Felicity was sad as she recalled that her sister was so anxious that she had sucked two teeth right out of her mouth. She testified that right after Sally gave birth to Charlie, she took him out of the house in the middle of the night and placed him in a shed in the backyard. The nurse found the missing child. Felicity described Charlie as unable to speak or walk and having a very large head on top of a small, frail body. Sally rejected the child and formed no bond with him. Sally was convinced she was black and ordered that all mirrors be removed from the Gianini home so she could not see her reflection. Before the birth of Charlie, Felicity testified that her sister had never consumed alcohol, but post-birth, she became an alcoholic. She testified that her sister denied she was pregnant with Jean. When Jean was born, Sally said, “Oh my, he looked like one of the famine children of India. There was nothing to Jean. He was a perfect skeleton with a huge head and ears—awful ears.” Sally rejected Jean and refused to feed the baby, even when he cried.
