The doorbell rang as people who loved Piper and Rosie came to help. Piper’s parents arrived before lunch and breezed into the cottage. Her mother glanced around and smiled. “I’m so glad you found a decent place to stay. I worried about you sleeping in that camper, and considering what’s happened, it appears I was correct. Glamping was a disaster.” She pulled Piper into a hug. “I’m so sorry, sweetheart. How are you? Why are you still wearing your evening dress?”

Piper grimaced. “Well, Mom, between running from a murder scene, worrying about my best friend, and being grilled by the local police, I ran out of time to change my clothes.”

Piper’s dad sat on the other side of her, patting her hand. “We will figure this out.”

Piper pulled her hand away from her dad before she snapped at his constant patting. “I don’t know how, Daddy.”

He nodded.

The doorbell rang again, and Ruby breezed in with a colossal coffee pot. “I can’t fix this, but I can keep my friend full of caffeine. Hello, Sarah. Jack.” She blew a kiss across the room to Piper and hurried into the kitchen.

Piper leaned against her dad’s shoulder and drifted off to sleep.
