CHAPTER 18

Travel Trailer Tip #18

Don’t ignore the things and events around you. Keep your eyes open all the time—except when sleeping, of course.

Throughout the day, while I worked my booth with increasing urgency, I bombarded Sammie with text messages. Naturally, I started to freak out when I didn’t hear from her. I wanted to find out if she was still on that date. Mostly, I wanted to make sure she was still alive. I almost called Pierce and Caleb to see if they could track her down. But I knew they would tell me it was too early to file a missing persons report. As I suspected, Sammie had been with Dallas, and she claimed she had forgotten her phone. Now Sammie and I stood in front of my trailer. I held Van in my arms as the last rays of sunshine faded across the sky, leaving streaks of navy and red against the pale blue expanse. Van wiggled in my arms when he spotted a white butterfly floating across our path. He desperately wanted to get at it. His attention was focused on the flying insect, but I was concentrating on getting details from Sammie. I needed to know way more about Dallas. I just couldn’t let my best friend hang out with someone who wasn’t good for her. I had her best interests to look out for.

Sammie ignored my scrutiny. She wouldn’t be able to ignore me forever, though, so I didn’t turn my attention away from her. I would force her to acknowledge me. Sure enough, only a few seconds later, she glanced my way.

“What?” she asked.

“You know what,” I said. “What’s the deal with this Dallas guy? I’m not comfortable with him. I don’t trust him.”

“Oh, he’s fine,” she said with a wave of her hand. “You’re just being paranoid.”

“Well, don’t you think I have a reason to feel that way?” I asked.

“He’s not a murderer if that’s what you think.”

“We don’t know that for sure. He wasn’t even in the lineup. And you’re talking about him as if absolutely nothing’s wrong.”

“As far as I’m concerned, absolutely nothing is wrong. I’m a good judge of character. I would know if he was bad.”

What could I say to that? There were plenty of people who thought they could judge character, and then they later found out the person was nothing like they thought.

“So tell me, what is it about this guy that has you so enamored?” I asked.

“Have you seen his eyes?” she asked. “I mean, I could just melt into them. He has the deepest, darkest brown eyes. Every time I see him it’s like swimming in a pool of chocolate. And the way his mouth turns up at one side and reveals that little dimple. I get light-headed.” Sammie swayed a little.

“Well, there has to be something beyond his looks. There has to be another reason why you’re so intrigued with him. Tell me more. Persuade me until I like him too.”

She shook her head. “Sometimes, I swear, Celeste, you’re impossible.
