The next several days were beyond stressful. People were constantly watching me and practically sitting with popcorn more than normal. While Izzy was cute when she did that and acted like she was watching a tennis match, these people were brimming with dark energy and excited to see me crash and burn.

Because the consensus was, I would crash and burn.

Hard.

Half thought I was going to get destroyed in the competition because I was being forced to do it. That meant—to the masses—that I’d gotten a super late start on practicing and prepping and was so bad that I needed Craftsman and White just to make me suitable. Not all that wise to assume, but that much negative focus on me was making not only my eye twitch but my hair fall out from stress.

I swore it was, but Stefanie promised that fairies didn’t ever have hair loss issues.

Right, but I was half demigod, so maybe they did? I wasn’t sure, but I really wanted to bug Lageos and get some fatherly support. He’d checked in and looked so wrecked and twisted up I had lied through my teeth that I was fine.

And made Iolas promise that people would seriously watch him. Fighting through that caustic darkness had to be disorienting. He was out and now reality was hitting him… And that reality was horrible. His mate was dead and he was—we didn’t know what happened to a demigod who lost their mate. He was the first.

I felt better when Iolas promised he was all over it and other friends of my mother were doing the same. Good, so I could focus on the monumental weight I was already struggling under. Awesome.

The other way people were sure I was going to crash and burn from the competition was I would out myself as a witch. They talked about it constantly, and we’d heard so much planning over all the bugs we’d had on councilmen that it wasn’t even funny. They were planning to have fucking armies waiting to secure me the moment I showed I was a witch to our world.

And they weren’t going to let me ignore them. I could say I wasn’t going to listen to them all I wanted, but they actually had a good spin that humans could say that about the police and it didn’t fly. Also that it was a law for witches to answer council mandates—which I had been given boatloads of—so they had the grounds to arrest me if I was a witch.

I wasn’t, so the shit was most definitely going to hit the fan if I couldn’t pull this hat trick off.

Which was why the fairies were fucking climbing the walls too.

Seriously, I needed to ask someone else about that hair loss or other stress triggers for fairies.

The Friday night before the competition, I had the meeting with the majority of awakened fairies or heads of families. In the most shocking turn of events ever, like ninety percent agreed with how Neldor and I wanted to handle the situation.
