How Do GPs and Outpatient Departments Manage Presentation of Eating Disorders in Children and Adolescents? [11]

Case Vignette

As a GP you are disturbed to see how thin your young patient Phoebe has become over the past winter. Last time she came to see you, before Christmas, she was a 15 year old hockey star, wanting to postpone her menstrual period so that it wouldn’t coincide with the Schools Championship match. It is now April, and her mother ushers her into the consulting room.

‘We’re at the end of our tether’ her mother tells you, and describes how the young girl is ‘a ridiculously faddy eater’, has visibly lost weight, and become a recluse, spending all her time in her bedroom, apparently studying like crazy for the public exams in a couple of months’ time.

Phoebe says nothing unless prompted, and insists she eats ‘loads and loads’ of the healthiest possible food. All her friends are ‘cramming’ too, so there’s nothing else to do. Of course she’s stressed out and her family are just making it worse.
