The general question to which these examples give rise is the sense in which Koranic law is monotheist. In a basic way, much of it is not, in the sense that there is little about its actual content which is intrinsically monotheist. What the Koran has to say of the status of women does not follow from the postulate that God is one, and could just as well be conjoined with polytheism or atheism. This is also true for much of the concrete detail of dietary law, with the exception of the provisions regarding the religious aegis under which an animal can validly be slaughtered. The case of pilgrimage is different, since it is a form of worship; and those aspects of the ritual which are performed around the Ka'ba have a strong monotheist association, inasmuch as this sanctuary was appointed by God and established by His prophet Abraham. With other aspects of the ritual, however, the association is a good deal looser. In general, what is monotheist about Koranic law is not its content but its form - not what God says, but the fact that it is He who says it.
