HE’D SLEPT THROUGH1 breakfast. Through Ben’s knock on the door. He hadn’t been first in the office and he’d slept through Frank Toyamichi’s call.

It was nine-fifteen, the latest Charles had ever slept. Even when he’d been on vacation. The reason was clear: he hadn’t fallen asleep until about six. But that was an excuse, nothing more.

Ellen must already be here. Had she found Holly?

Holly. Not anymore. She’d probably be Jane this morning, and that presented another set of problems.

Hoisting himself out of bed, he headed for his bathroom. As he showered, the problems hit him as hard and fast as the water. Was she awake? If she was awake, would she remember yesterday? She’d be humiliated by her behavior. He’d have to dismiss it as nothing. But what about his kiss? How was he going to explain that? David. He’d call David, ask him to come over. David would help her understand.

Damn, if she was awake, she might not even know where she was. What if she was scared to death? Cowering in some corner? Or what if she’d called the police?

Charles washed in record time, barely rinsed, then got out of the shower and into his towel. Shaving would have to wait.

If she wasn’t Jane, then what? He couldn’t have her here another day. He had to go to the office. Surely she shouldn’t be left alone.

Ellen could watch her. Ellen was a sensible woman; she’d understand, and she’d take care of her. At least, he hoped so.

Finished in the bath, he went to his closet and was jolted again at what she’d bought, and how she’d shoved all of his things aside. What about all this stuff? It could be returned. But then maybe that wasn’t the right thing to do. Maybe he should let her keep her new things. They couldn’t have cost that much.

He dressed hurriedly, cringing at the wrinkles in his shirt, then headed out to assess the situation. Oddly enough, he found himself hoping she hadn’t remembered. Which was crazy. She was nothing but trouble. She’d turned everything upside down. All he wanted was his life back. His nice, orderly life.

She wasn’t in the hallway. He headed for the guest room, treading as lightly as possible. The last thing he wanted to do was scare her. A few more steps and he was at the door. The open door. He leaned forward, craning his neck so he could see inside.

No Jane. Holly. Neither one. And the bed was made. Okay. He headed back down the hall, this time faster, and into the living room. Even before he could see into the kitchen, he heard them. Two feminine voices, one older, gruffer, one young and eager. Who was he going to find chatting with Ellen?

His pace slowed as he passed the couch. Ellen stood by the sink, a cup of coffee in her hand. She wore a broad grin, one he’d never seen before. But he couldn’t see her.

He hesitated. Maybe the smart thing to do was just leave.
