Chapter Eight

“Hold on a second, Kay,” Genesis said into her cell phone.

She was in the grocery store picking up a few items for dinner. Standing in the middle of the bread aisle, she pushed her cart off to the side and pulled her earbuds from the side pocket of her crossbody bag.

“Okay, sorry about that,” she said, adjusting the buds in her ear. “Now what were you saying?”

This was the second call she had received regarding the Juneteenth event. Though she and Carol had done most of the groundwork, they had a committee, as well as a virtual assistant, Kay, to help with some of the smaller details.

“You mentioned that the committee wanted to have a flag on the programs,” the VA said, “but which one do you want to use—the Pan-African flag or the actual Juneteenth flag?”

“Hmm, that’s a good question.”

The red, black, and green Pan-African flag symbolized Black liberation in the United States. Genesis was leaning towards using that one because its colors were well-known in the Black community. Red was for the bloodshed and the struggle and sacrifice. While black represented the Black people, and green stood for the wealth of the land.

But in the late nineties, Ben Haith, the founder of the National Juneteenth Celebration Foundation, had created a flag to symbolize Juneteenth. The colors: red, white, and blue, were meant to demonstrate that even while enslaved, African Americans were American.

Genesis sighed. She had too many thoughts running through her mind to make the decision on the fly.

“Kay, that’s a great question, but let me get back to you Monday. I want to run this by a couple of people before we decide.”

They talked for a few minutes longer before disconnecting. Instead of returning her phone to her bag, Genesis shot off a quick text to Noah. Dinner was going to be a little late. She typed that she would call him when she left the grocery store. He didn’t know it yet, but he was going to be on sous-chef duty.

A half hour later, Genesis hurried to her car. She loved that it was staying light out longer, but the sun had slid behind the horizon, and the sky was tinted with streaks of orange, yellow, and red.

Beautiful, she thought as she unlocked her car and placed the bags in the back seat before slamming the door.

“Hello, sweet Genesis.”

Genesis screamed and whirled around with her hand on her chest. “Ronnie! Oh, my God! You scared me to death. What’s wrong with you? What are you doing lurking around out here? And how did you even know I was here?”

“I have my ways.” A smarmy smile spread across his face, and he moved closer.

His eyes were red, and he was twitching. That was something she hadn’t noticed the other day. Was he high?

“I wanted to see you. We need to talk.”

Her heart rate picked up speed. She glanced around trying not to look like she was checking out her surroundings. The parking lot was well-lit, but she didn’t see anyone.
