Mr. Darcy was standing at the door of the drawing room, listening to Georgiana play a haunting melody. He had been observing her for some minutes, but she was so lost in her music, that she was not aware he was there.

The music came to an end and for a moment she was absolutely still. Suddenly she became aware of his presence and she laughed. “Fitzwilliam you scared me. What are you doing here?”

Darcy walked into the room. “I was just enjoying your playing.”

She smiled at him. “Thank you. It is a new piece that Mr. Hale has taught me. I don’t think I have quite enough feeling in it yet.”

“It sounded beautiful to me,” said Darcy, truthfully.

Her cheeks were pink at his compliment.

Darcy wondered if he dared ask her to do something for him.

“Would you like to hear another piece?”

“In a moment. I have a question to ask you first.”

Georgiana immediately looked worried.

Darcy ploughed on. “I was wondering if you would consider playing at the dinner on Thursday...it would be...”

His words petered away. Her expression had changed from looking worried to one of horror.

“How could you ask? You know how much I dislike playing in front of people. I’m just not good enough. It is unfair. Do you expect me to play because you paid for some new trimmings?”

The words coming out so quickly he could barely hear what she was saying.

Georgiana closed the lid of the piano. “It is not right. You should never have suggested it. I do not want to be held up to ridicule.”

“Georgiana enough!”

They both jumped at the sound of Lady Monmouth’s voice. Her ladyship was standing in the doorway.

“What on earth is the matter?”

Georgiana was still agitated. “Fitzwilliam wants me to play at the dinner party. I cannot do it. I can’t.”

“And nor will you have to,” said her ladyship firmly. “Now you and I are due at Lady Sackville’s home in half an hour - so please go and get ready.”

Georgiana, nodded and left the room, glaring at Darcy on her way out.

“Thank you,” said Darcy.

Her ladyship’s eyes had narrowed. “These guests must be very important if you tried to persuade Georgiana to play. You know how much she dislikes it.”

“Lady CaI thought she had made such progress, that she may have changed her mind,” said Darcy, “Clearly it was a mistake.”

A small smile tugged at her ladyship’s lips. “Do not be a fool Darcy, nor act as if I am one. It is beneath you.”

Darcy felt annoyed. “It was not my intention to insult you.”

“I know it wasn’t, but even when you were a small boy you were always so arrogant. Now you are a man, it is one of your worst traits.”

Darcy was seething. “Is there anything else you wish to tell me.”

He could see that she was trying not to laugh.

“Now don’t be cross. As your father’s sister it is my privilege to tell you the truth. Now who is this Miss Bennet you have invited?”

“She is the niece of Mr.
