Soon the three Bennet sisters were in the Gardiner carriage with their Aunt Madeline rolling towards Grosvenor to pay a call on Ophelia.

The carriage stopped soon enough before a townhome in the wealthier area of Town. When Elizabeth stepped down from the carriage, the door to Darcy House flew open and Devon, the footman from Lady Louise’s, came rushing down the steps toward her.

Elizabeth scrambled to climb back inside the carriage and took hold of Lydia’s arm as she was still waiting to descend the carriage steps.

“Lizzy, what has happened? You are trembling!”

“He is here, Lydia. Devon is here!” Elizabeth felt the world tilt around her and she closed her eyes and breathed deeply. She could hear Lydia’s voice but her words did not matter.

Aunt Madeline climbed into the carriage and took Elizabeth’s hands. She rubbed them briskly. “Lizzy, Lizzy, open your eyes dear and listen to me. You are safe. Mr. Darcy has come to the carriage door and will help you down.”

Elizabeth opened her eyes and swallowed the lump in her throat. She had been just a moment from crying out before Aunt Madeline took hold of her hands.

“Miss Elizabeth,” Mr. Darcy said, his hand reaching in for her to take, “he is gone. He did not come here for you. He will never return to Darcy House again and you have nothing to fear. I will care for you.”

She looked to Mrs. Gardiner and her aunt nodded. “Go to him, Lizzy, for he tells the truth. That man has gone. He never even looked our way. You are safe here.”

Elizabeth moved slowly, her legs wobbly beneath her. Mr. Darcy took her hand and Aunt Gardiner held her about the waist as she stepped down. Lydia came next and Elizabeth was grateful for her presence.

Mr. Darcy looked at her, his countenance one of concern. He placed her hand upon his arm and smiled at her sisters and aunt. “Let us go in for Miss Ophelia has been eager to meet more of your family, Miss Elizabeth.”

Elizabeth glanced around not quite believing that Devon had gone without threatening her or Lydia. Mr. Darcy squeezed her hand and drew her closer to his side. Instead of meeting his gaze, Elizabeth raised her eyes and focused on the front door of Darcy House.
