They arrived in Brighton, mud-splattered and wet. Fortunately, Bingley had already procured their apartments at the Old Ship and was awaiting their arrival anxiously.

“Thank heavens you arrived. We decided to ride ahead of you when you did not meet us at Patcham. I was worried that you had met with an accident, and was just getting ready to set out to look for you.”

“We were stuck in the mud, as you can probably tell,” said Elizabeth, with a small laugh, looking down at her clothes. “I do not think they will allow us into the inn dressed like this.”

“They are quite accustomed to it,” said Mr. Bingley. “Everyone has to get out of the carriage at Clayton Hill and walk up in any case, so muddy and wet clothes are the common theme if it is raining. That was what the footman told me at any rate. You should come inside and have your clothes washed and dried.”

Everyone was too tired to do much of anything beyond having food sent to their chambers and Darcy did not have any opportunity to speak to Elizabeth at all. Both mentally and physically exhausted, he fell asleep with the rhythm of the waves in his ears and the figure of Elizabeth Darcy filling his thoughts.
