Dinner was a merry affair that evening. To the credit of Mr Collins, he could now see the funny side of what had happened.

Lizzy very kindly told him what he had said.

“Good heavens,” he said with a shake of his head, “did I really say, ’with a pinch of salt.’”

“I’m afraid so, Mr Collins.”

“And how are you feeling, Kitty?” said Lizzy softly, seated next to her younger sister.

“Much better, thank you, Lizzy. It was just what I needed. No offence to Mr Collins, but I realise that talk of ghosts and evil spirits is nonsense. They say that laughter is the best medicine, don’t they?”

“And Mr Clarey? Do you still think of him? Do you still fret for him?”

Kitty looked down at her plate.

“Oh no, I think not, Lizzy. That is a poor dream which has faded away.”

Lizzy looked closely at her sister. It was possible that Kitty was lying, even to herself. She looked up at Darcy. They gave each other a secret little smile and Darcy mouthed the word ‘tomorrow’.

At the end of the first course, Darcy stood up and addressed the table.

“Ladies and Gentlemen, I trust you enjoyed the…er…entertainment this evening. And thank you to Mr Collins for being such a good sport about it. Stand up, Mr Collins.”

Mr Collins stood up sheepishly. He grinned and gave the audience a little bow. In a strange way his performance, or rather his good-natured response following the laughter at his performance, had rather endeared him to the other guests. It was as though he had learned some humility at last.

Darcy continued.

“Now, I cannot promise that the evenings for the next week or so will be quite so entertaining, but we will have dancing every day with music provided by an excellent orchestra. I hope you will all enjoy yourselves and please feel free to make full use of the amenities at Pemberley. Thank you.”

He sat down to a smattering of applause and the second course was duly served…
