Jean Dumaine flourished in his Louisiana swamp parish. The Chakatee were eager to teach him and make him feel welcome. A huge feast was thrown the first night he arrived. He sat between the elders still covered in mud with fresh mosquito bites and whelps covering most of his body. He was eating strange foods and drinking even stranger liquids. Dumaine found himself overwhelmed with an unusual sensation. He couldn’t put his finger on it at first. Young warriors danced in his honor as the oldest women of the tribe draped a buffalo cape around his shoulders. The drums and the chanting filled the night with a hypnotic rhythm that seemed to reach into his very soul. The old chief sitting beside him offered him something to drink. Dumaine drank deeply. There was much cheering and laughing as he emptied the gourd.

The old chief pointed behind him and said something that he couldn’t understand. He looked behind him. In the center of the village was a small pool of water. Dumaine watched in fascination as cool, clear water gurgled up from a stone near the edge of the pool. An almost hypnotic trance came over him as he watched the flames of the fire flickering in the water’s dark surface. Small circles rippled from the center of the pool as though someone had thrown a pebble in it. Dumaine was captivated by the water. It pulsed to the beat of the drums. He could sense something powerful happening in the small pool. He felt it; a force, a presence, something just underneath the surface of the water. He leaned forward.

Voices! Other voices! He could hear them whispering through the water. Amber and silver light flickered as the water rippled first inward and then upward. Upward? Something was pushing against the water from the other side! What the hell? He jumped back when he saw it! Something was rising out of the pool! Pawing through the surface, reaching into the air, a ghostly hand broke through the surface of the water. A slight squeal escaped from his lungs as he pawed the ground behind in a mad effort to put even more distance between himself and the apparition. He instantly stopped all movement. A voice seemed to flutter into his mind. Strange words with odd sounds--flowing from the hand; and, yet he understood them. In truth, he felt the words more than he heard them. They bounced around his brain looking for something to grab hold to; something to connect with. The voice spoke to some primal corner of his consciousness. It shook him to his very core. It frightened and excited him as its words echoed into his mind, “What the HELL are YOU doing here?”

He struggled to rise; whimpering sounds coming from his mouth. The chief, seated on his left, stared at him in alarm. Dumaine pointed towards the pond. The chief studied Dumaine’s frantic expression and then erupted into billowing laughter. He slapped the young priest on the back.
