Yana: A young looking mother of three, aged three, five and 18 months
Yana is 22-years-old but very young looking. She was forced to traffic drugs into the UK from her native Nigeria. She was convicted of carrying 41 packages of cocaine in her stomach. The drugs had a street value of £40,000. Despite explaining to the judge that she was forced to traffic the drugs by a drug gang that had, allegedly, already beaten her husband so badly he could no longer work â for refusing to be a mule. They had then âstolenâ her youngest child â telling her they would only return the child once she had successfully carried the drugs â Yana was sentenced to eight years. She did not speak any English and although a translator was provided for her at her trial, she understood little of what was happening around her during it. She was isolated and depressed on the wings and had no contact with her family or children, unsure for months into her sentence that they even knew where she was. Yana was reluctant to engage with her sentence plan because she didnât understand what was required of her and was restricted in her ability to engage because of the language barrier. On hearing music from a room in her prison location, she followed the sound and found a music therapy group singing and dancing a Nigerian lullaby â only one of the other women was Nigerian but had chosen the Nigerian music from a selection the therapist had brought. Yana was brought to tears by the sound of music from her home with words she understood â slowly she began to interact, with the music therapist only, eventually engaging with her fellow Nigerian on the wing â who did speak English. Yana was able to communicate finally and so was able to gradually share her story and secure appropriate support to help her understand what would happen to her.
