Fighting the wrong battles. When the Activist, the issue, and the moment collide, as it did when Lenin came to power after the Russian Revolution, history is made. But Activists have to be smart about when and how they strike. After a round of layoffs, the Activist who still has a job is ill advised to march into the boss’s office and demand raises for everyone who made the cut.

Fighting too many battles at once. César Chávez founded and led the first successful farm workers’ union in U.S. history. He forged a national support coalition of unions, church groups, students, minorities, and consumers. He led a successful five-year strike and boycott against California grape growers. This takes tremendous skill and determination. But it also takes focus. Chávez may very well have believed people should also drive electric cars, recycle, and stop eating red meat. But he was smart enough not to dilute his message by championing too many causes at once.

Self-righteousness. The Activist is sometimes tempted to cast those with differing views as morally inferior. Lynn from Operations is a vegan who does not eat meat, chicken, eggs, or cheese. Lynn’s colleague Jeri from Accounting still eats meat, chicken, eggs, and cheese. Jeri does not deserve to be scolded or shamed during lunch. She just wants to eat her bologna sandwich in peace. The company cafeteria is big enough for both of them.

Discomfort with Dissension. Differences of opinion help businesses ultimately make the right decisions, manufacture the best products, and offer employees the best benefits packages. The Activist needs to realize that differing points of view, dialogue, and compromise are critical for reaching the best solutions.

Intolerance. Some Activists are so certain they’re right that they lose their ability to entertain the possibility they might be wrong—and show no interest in checking.
