House A or House B? Look at figure 5-8. Both houses have exterior dimensions of 24 feet by 36 feet, a common and quite sensible size chosen by first-time owner-builders. House A has 864 square feet on the ground floor. The designer of House B took the same basic dimensions, but decided that he wanted a floor plan that puts the master bedroom and the children’s bedroom in separate “wings,” with a courtyard in front of the house. Moreover, he likes the look of the structure better than House A. Fine, these are all valid value judgments and, after all—music, please—everybody’s different. But you should know what these value judgments will cost, in terms of time, money, ease of construction, and energy efficiency.
