FIFTEEN
Sunset stained the sky over New Brunswick as the Sea Lion docked in the harbor at Saint John.
Glorious banners of mauve and orange streamed across the sky, and a fiery light touched the tips of the gauzy white clouds overhead. It was May and the air was filled with gulls and cranes, swooping for fish, squawking at the fishermen. There was charm and beauty in the scene, Anemone thought, staring out at it all from the rail of the ship as the Sea Lion glided up the Bay of Fundy and cast anchor in the busy port.
She was struck by the innocent and lovely vista of this coastal town. Forests of tall white pines and flat-topped hills rose in the distance beyond Saint John, and she could see the roofs of farmhouses and shops nestled beyond the harbor. There was certainly nothing sinister about the scene, nothing that bespoke danger or menace, yet the familiar tightening in her stomach began as she looked out at the tall sails of the ships bobbing in the water, at the bustling activity on the docks. She always felt this way when about to embark on a dangerous assignment. Her nerves tautened, and every muscle tingled with an odd, racing excitement.
âReady?â Stephenâs voice at her elbow made her turn her head quickly toward him. There was a crystalline sparkle in her wide-set eyes that gave him his answer.
The moment theyâd sailed into the Bay of Fundy theyâd begun to make their plans, outlining how they would go ashore together posing as husband and wifeâan American merchant captain and his bride.
It was a beginning only. Once theyâd assembled what information they could about the Belvidere and its crew, they would begin to formulate a plan for the difficult part, the freeing of Johnny Tucker.
âAre any of the other men going ashore?â she asked as Stephen dropped an arm across her shoulders. Even though it was the third of May, the temperature here on the coast was chilly, especially with the descent of the sun. A light shiver ran across her shoulder blades beneath the gauzy green muslin of her gown, and Stephen felt it beneath his arm.
âNo, I donât want to attract any more attention than is necessary,â he replied in a low tone. âAlthough William will meet me on the docks at eight oâclock to get his orders, assuming we have any for him by then.â
There was something different about Stephen tonight, Anemone noted. He looked grim and hard, almost frightening, the way he had in England, and there was a cool quality to his voice she hadnât heard in a long time. He, too, sensed the oncoming danger and knew the quickening of tension brought on by an imminent confrontation with unknown forces.
She felt his excitement, saw the glitter in his eyes. There was absolutely no fear in him about what was to come, only a kind of grim anticipation, a charged deadliness that communicated itself to her in the set of his jaw and in the keen way he scrutinized the long line of ships in the harbor.
