$100-150

It’s hard to miss the distinctive Gothic Inn (440 Dodge St., 401/466-2918, www.thegothicinn.com, Memorial Day-Columbus Day weekends, $110-210), decked with frilly verge board, sharp pointed gables, and striking finials. Set back from the road on a grassy lawn, the inn is backed by Crescent Beach and is steps from Old Harbor restaurants and shops. Room decor is simple and pleasant, with a clean, austere feel and Shaker-style furniture; from some windows you can enjoy views of the harbor. Also available are two-bedroom efficiency apartments, which are great for families and friends traveling together.

The Gables Inn (54 Dodge St., 401/466-2213, www.gablesinnbi.com, mid-Apr.-Nov., $125-210) includes two 1860s Victorian inns with nice details like pressed-tin ceilings and vintage floral wallpapers. There are romantic, antique-furnished rooms here as well as more functionally furnished apartments and cottages better suited for longer stays and families with children. Amenities include barbecue grills and picnic tables, a laundry room, and bike racks. The inn is also very child-friendly; cribs and strollers are available upon request, and beach supplies like chairs, umbrellas, and coolers are available as well. Baby Beach is only a two-minute walk away.

Block Island’s Hotel Seasons

About a dozen of the nearly 60 accommodations on Block Island stay open year-round, but sometimes only on weekends in winter. The larger hotels in town are open mostly from April or early May through late October, some open or close a month earlier or later, and a couple stay open only Memorial Day through Columbus Day.

In high season, July through August, virtually every accommodation has a two-night minimum on weekends, and many a four-night or even seven-night minimum. These policies are based on supply and demand—in a slow week, or if there’s iffy weather, you may get lucky and find a place willing to book your stay for just a night. Accommodations generally let the Block Island Chamber of Commerce know when there are last-minute availabilities or cancellations. So don’t give up hope, even on a busy weekend, of finding a room on short notice—just keep in mind that your options may be limited.

Compared with Newport, Nantucket, the Hamptons, or many other upscale seaside resorts in the Northeast, Block Island does not have exorbitantly priced rooms. On a high-season weekend, you’ll rarely see rooms with private baths renting for less than $150 but it’s not impossible to find them. Budget travelers who don’t mind a room with a shared bath will find a substantial selection on Block Island—sometimes for even less than $100 per night. On the other hand, rates at higher-end properties have been edging up during the past few years. It’s now common to find rooms over $250 per night, and even over $350, that are not quite luxurious. Location and the laws of supply and demand, rather than amenities, seem to dictate these higher prices.

Because so many of Block Island’s visitors stay for four days or more during the high season, midweek rates generally don’t fall by much—but it is realistic to expect a drop of 10-20 percent at most places.
