RÍO BLANCO AND CERRO MUSÚN

Cerro Musún, one of Nicaragua’s youngest and least visited parks, encompasses the 1,460-meter peak of the same name and is still the haunt of some of Central America’s more elusive mammals, like the puma. In 2004, however, Musín (“water mountain” in Nahuatl) lived up to its name when heavy rains caused several of its lower slopes to collapse, destroying several hillside communities in a massive mudslide.

The town of Río Blanco is your jumping-off point for hikes in this tremendous reserve area. Rest and feed up at Hotel y Restaurante Bosawas (tel. 505/2778-0914 or 505/8856-9884, $15 with fan, $20 with a/c), or at the rudimentary Hospedaje Blanco ($5), before tackling hikes up to the seven waterfalls or the peak itself. Your hikes start at the FUNDENIC guide station (about one km out of town), where you can hire a guide to lead you through the reserve (from $10/day).

While you’re in town, check out the statues in the Catholic church, artifacts from the pre-Columbian civilizations that occupied these lands. They left behind some petroglyphs at the river’s edge (visible only during the dry season). Start searching near the red hanging bridge on the exit to Barrio Martin Centeno.

Two express buses leave for Río Blanco from Managua’s Mayoreo terminal around noon; additional service is available from the COTRAN Guanuca in Matagalpa.
