THE MYSTERIOUS DISAPPEARANCE
OF EDGAR GARIÃPYâS PHOTOS
There are very few remaining photographs of the Montreal Laboratory, and most of those are stored away in the family photo albums of its former employees. However, there was a well-known professional Quebec photographer who was commissioned by the Montreal Laboratory. Edgar Gariépy, whose photos are considered today a remarkable source of images of Quebec from the first half of the 20th century,11 appears on the Laboratoryâs list of employees from Summer 1944 until the end of 1945. Surely, during those eighteen months, he must have taken dozens, if not hundreds, of photos. Otherwise, why would he have been hired? Those invaluable historic photos appear to have been lost. Only the two group portraits on pages 69 and 104 were likely taken by Gariépy, as Alma Chackett mentioned in our interviews.
The Edgar Gariépy archives, which contain thousands of photographs, are held by the City of Montreal. Despite extensive searching of this fonds, as well as at Archives nationales du Québec, I found nothing in connection to the Montreal Laboratory. These mysterious photographs are nowhere to be found in the UK National Archives either, or even at the National Research Council of Canada archives I visited in Ottawa. Perhaps they are buried somewhere within Library and Archives Canadaâs labyrinthine system, but there again, I was unable to locate a single one. If ever those âlostâ photos do reappear, they will serve to safeguard the memory of the Montreal Laboratory beyond the written word.
