Chapter Nineteen

Monica pulled her SUV into the driveway at the front of the house. She recognized the multiple cars parked outside as vehicles belonging to her siblings. Shaken after the argument at the restaurant, she didn’t want to see anyone right now, so she quietly entered the house. Laughter came from the direction of the great room.

She crept up the stairs in her bare feet and almost reached her bedroom when she ran into Skye, Ethan’s fiancée. She had tawny-gold skin, her full-figured body currently poured into a pair of green pajamas, and her hair lifted off her neck in a high ponytail. Last year, she and Ethan went through a difficult period and temporarily broke up, but their relationship was back to normal as they planned their wedding.

“Hey, we missed you at dinner. Bruno and Rodolfo cooked a delicious meal tonight. Oh my goodness, I’m full.” She patted her belly. “You coming downstairs? There’s an intense game of charades taking place. Ignacio is cheating, as usual, mouthing clues to his teammates. You know how he is.”

Ignacio, an actor and one of Monica’s stepbrothers, often returned to Atlanta in-between filming.

Monica shook her head. “I have to pass,” she said, mustering her best smile.

The effort failed because a frown descended on Skye’s face.

“Hey, what’s wrong?”

“I don’t want to talk about it.” Monica averted her eyes and bolted for her bedroom door.

Before she could close it, Skye pushed her way in, and Monica backed away.

“Talk to me.”

Skye’s gentle prodding was her undoing. Her face crumbled, and she covered her face with her hands as tears poured down her face.

“Oh, honey. What’s going on?” Skye looped an arm around her shoulders and led her to sit on the edge of the bed.

“I don’t know what I’m doing. I’m losing my mind.” Monica sniffled and wiped tears from her cheeks.

“What happened?”

“This guy… he… I can’t get him out of my head. We used to be a couple. Honestly, I consider him my first love, and ever since we ran into each other, I can’t think straight. It’s like someone is ripping my heart out.”

“Sounds like you’re in love,” Skye said quietly.

Monica glared at her through watery eyes. “No. I am not in love.”

“Then why are you crying?”

“His fiancée caught us kissing. Well, more than kissing.” She shook her head, disgusted with herself and her behavior.

“Oh,” Skye said in a heavy tone.

Monica didn’t look at her. She didn’t want to see judgment on her face.

“Does he feel the same way you do?”

Contemplating the answer, Monica lifted her heels to the edge of the bed and wrapped her arms around her legs. “I don’t know,” she said honestly. “All I know is, I don’t like feeling like this. It’s not supposed to hurt.” Her voice cracked.

“What isn’t?”

“This. Whatever it is.”

“You mean love?” Skye asked gently.

“I’m not in love with him, Skye. In lust, maybe. Love is… no.” She shook her head vehemently and squeezed her legs tighter.

She couldn’t be in love with Andre. After years apart, they barely knew each other now.
