KEY PRACTICE 2
ENGAGE THE WHOLE PERSON
When faced with a crucial decision, is it better to rigorously examine the data or rely on your intuition?
On the side of data-based decision-making stand countless MBA programs and a consulting industry primed to crank out recommendations based on rigorous analytics. On the side of gut decision-making stand a legion of heroic CEOs—from Steve Jobs to Jack Welch—and bestselling author Malcolm Gladwell, whose book Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking promotes the benefits of winging it.7
But it’s a false choice. Making decisions by data alone—even if it were possible—runs the risk of either “paralysis by analysis” or of making decisions that are logical on the surface but don’t work in reality. At the same time, the thought of leaders simply following their guts without a strong reality check is equally terrifying. The last thing that leaders need in navigating VUCA World is an excuse to not think too hard.
It’s a dilemma that goes back to the ancient Greeks. For a long time, many scholars saw reason and emotion as separate, often warring, systems. But the scientific study of human emotion—a shockingly young field—has made remarkable gains over the past couple of decades.8 While there’s much we still don’t understand, researchers have made important discoveries in recent years that have implications for strategic conversations.
