Pick a direction from where the light source comes. In my painting, the sun is the main source of light, and it’s coming from the left side of the outdoor space. With the light source in mind, block in the colors with a flat paintbrush, generally shaping the piece. In my scene, the darkest parts are on the left (where the light source is located), and the lightest parts are on the right, where the light hits.

For the walls, take a medium pink paint, and create a lighter tone and a darker tone. Use the light tone on the right side, where the bright sun hits. Add the dark tone to the left side. Begin to add details to the scene, such as the balcony railing.
