Chapter Twenty-One

THE NEXT few days were a blur. I barely remembered their passing as I got up only to piss, and left Ollie’s side to shower and shave only while Will and James watched over him. If I slept, it was only minutes at a time. Never long enough to dream again. I didn’t want the memories.

They brought me food, which I ate because I needed it to function. Will had said something to me about the shooting, but I barely recalled it. Nothing mattered until Ollie opened his eyes. I needed to see his pretty green eyes on me again. Needed to know he’d wake up and worry about his cat.

And early in the morning, three days after the shooting, he finally opened his eyes. I jolted upright in the chair—which likely had a permanent impression of my ass—hitting the call button and reaching for him at the same time. A soft smile touched his lips. I fumbled to half stand so I could kiss his forehead.

“Kade,” he whispered in the softest voice, almost an inaudible puff of air.

“Ollie,” I choked out and pressed my forehead to his to stare into those beautiful green eyes. “Oh baby. Thank you. Thank you for not leaving me. I’m so sorry.” Sorry I’d been unable to protect him. Sorry I hadn’t been close enough to take the shot myself. Sorry I’d been too slow to react.

He let out a long sigh. “Tired,” he whispered.

“Yeah, that’s okay. You sleep. I’ll be right here, okay?”

“Promise?”

“Yes, baby. Of course. Yes. Fuck, baby, you scared me.” I ran my fingers over his face. “I love you so much.”

“Love you,” he whispered, his eyes closed as the on-call nurse came in. It didn’t matter. He was awake. His body was responding well to the surgery. I’d actually watched Gabriel change the bandage, wouldn’t let any other nurse touch him, which had elicited an argument with the hospital staff. When any of the other nurses needed to check on Ollie, I only allowed it if one of my guards or Will was in the room. Most often it was Will. This time it was Steven who came in behind the nurse.

“He was awake. Recognized me,” I told them. He had told me he loved me.

“That’s great, boss,” Steven said, a big smile on his face. He watched as the nurse checked Ollie’s vitals. “Maybe you can get some sleep now?”

“I’m fine.” I stared at Ollie’s sleeping face. And he did appear to be sleeping now. His beautiful dark lashes fanned out over his cheeks. Lips a little chapped, though I’d been applying his favorite moisturizer often. Tomas was better at it than me. He’d cleaned Ollie’s hair and rubbed some sort of lotion into his face, arms, and legs. Gabriel had let Tomas unhook the Sequential Compression Device (SCD) from Ollie’s legs so Tomas could clean them and rub lotion into his skin. Tomas had even given Ollie a foot massage. It was meant to calm the body into relaxing so it could just work on healing.
