WE BOTH STARE AT IT.

At the bronze cross hanging on the wall opposite from the bed in my room, the one that Mister Dark distinctly said wouldn’t help me against him.

“I have strong reason to believe that is not it,” I say, still staring at the cross, side by side with Sierra. I fold my arms across my chest. “Last night he didn’t seem very impressed by it.” I frown, focusing on what I’ve read about him, plus the story that he told me himself. “In fact, the only thing that ever weakened him was mercury. Which is a liquid, an almost ‘living’ type of silver, that can’t be forged into a spear. And if the first part of the prophecy is to be taken literally—When the orphan raises war—, and the second part, too, She shall spear the dark core, I’ll have to put a solid tip through his chest.”

“When the orphan raises war, she shall spear the dark core,” Sierra repeats slowly, her tongue rounding every word, her eyes fixed on the cross. “But that would mean that by lifting the book, you already speared his core.” Her face lights up, and she snaps her fingers. “That’s it.”

“What is it?”

“When you lifted the book, you used magic. The prophecy says that, in lifting the book, you spear the dark core—WHEN the orphan, she SHALL spear. That can only mean your magic is the weapon. You have to summon chaos to flow through your fingertips again, and hurl it at his chest.” Her eyes sparkle as if she just found the meaning of life. “This has to be it! He would never see it coming.”

“I don’t know...”

“Think about it, Izzy. If it were a weapon that you were supposed to use—” She motions to the cross with the pointed lower part, which makes it look more like a weapon than a real cross, “you would probably not even get close to him, let alone actually pierce his chest. He’s tall, strong, swift, a dark mage. No way you could actually hurt him physically.”

“But I don’t actually have magic. What happened in the study, it could have been just a glitch.”

She takes my face in her hands, establishing direct eye contact with me. “I know enough to tell you this—it wouldn’t have happened if you didn’t have a mage’s blood flowing through your veins.”

I can barely wrap my mind around that part. “But even if that story with my real father is true, he does not have real magic. Nothing special flows through his veins, otherwise he would already be in another realm.”

“Yes, but after all those years using black magic and leading the Guild of Shadows, maybe something in his DNA changed. Maybe his DNA did latch on to the powers of the universe, but they didn’t manifest in him, they did in you.”

Well, fuck me.

“All right, then how do you suppose I go about this? Because I have to do something fast. I need to act yesterday.”

“It’s simple. You have to go to him.
