I didn’t think I would talk to anyone from my old work again. I thought I would at least get a message from Alina, my editor, but she didn’t say a word to me after I got fired. It would be nice to know how everyone was keeping up and if Meghan had regretted letting me go.

I went up the street to Café Lamberts just like Becky had suggested. She was excited to see me and treated me to tea and a scone.

She told me how the office hadn’t been the same without me. Meghan had become even more tyrannical running the place. She’d taken away most of everyone’s publication privileges. Nothing got printed unless it went through her first. I was partially responsible for that, but I had to let bygones be bygones.

“How are you doing otherwise?” Becky asked, blowing on her tea before taking a sip.

“I’ve been okay. Besides working at Savees, I’ve also been freelance writing.”

“I’m glad you’re still writing. Whatever happened with Meghan is in the past. I know you’ve got some major talent.”

“Thanks,” I blushed. “How about you? Anything changed?”

“I’m seeing someone,” she bit her lip.

I raised my eyebrows. “And?”

“Well, we’re just having sex, really,” she giggled.

“Sex is good,” I shrugged.

She looked around and leaned over the table as if she were about to reveal a big secret. “I’m seeing Samuel Loukas. You know the editor for The Rudson?”

My mouth fell open. “You’re kidding me—You’re seeing Samuel Loukas?”

“Yes—” she looked me, “Don’t tell anyone, okay?”

I shook my head in disbelief, “I’m so happy for you.”

It must have been that Brazilian blowout of hers. I could see how a natural redhead like her would attract a lot of guys.

“The Rudson is an amazing publication,” I beamed. “It’s my dream to work for them.”

“Are you serious?” she asked. “It’s the complete opposite of Madison Weekly.”

“I know. I’ve always wanted to take my work more seriously. Madison Weekly is all about sensationalism.”

With Becky revealing that she was dating a celebrity, I almost wanted to spill what I had been going through. But I held my tongue, not wanting to make things more complicated than they were.

“You know what?” Becky perked up. “Samuel mentioned that he was looking for a new writer or something. I could put in a good word for you.”

“What?” I slammed the table. “No—you couldn’t.”

“Yes,” she grabbed my arm, “I could. I’m sure he wouldn’t mind looking at some of the stuff you have. But I think if I pass him your stuff, you’ll have to give me something that isn’t tabloid-y.”

“No—Becky—I couldn’t.”

“Elise. I’m not offering twice.”

“Okay, okay.” I smiled. “Wow. I—thank you.”

When I got home, I rushed to my computer by the windowsill. I knew I couldn’t send her over any of the articles I’d written for T.E.P.S. Those were private property, and I wouldn’t jeopardize James’ company like that.

However, I did take the opportunity to kill two birds with one stone. I scanned through all the stories on my blog and picked the one that showed off my investigative ability.
