ADAM SAT ON the other recliner, remaining upright. He’d probably doze some, but he hadn’t been kidding. The slightest abnormal sound could wake him in an instant. And when it did, he’d become wide awake.

Lessons of war. War taught a lot of lessons, not often good ones.

So far he was pretty sure this creep wasn’t likely to act. More postcards, probably. Maybe another ugly, gutted animal. Scare tactics. But why?

He couldn’t imagine Lily having engendered that kind of hate in anyone. Just couldn’t imagine it. There were people in this town who had enemies. But none of them would ever stoop to such heinous acts. They usually just ignored each other, had verbal fights and the occasional swinging of fists.

Pretty much normal reactions, the latter especially when drunk. Occasionally Mahoney’s bar enjoyed the inebriated results.

The cops would break up the fights if necessary, someone might spend a night in the holding cell above the sheriff’s offices, but that was usually the extent of it. As long as no one got seriously hurt, why make a criminal case out of it?

Not necessary in this small town. People got drunk, threw a couple of punches, many of which missed their targets. He’d seen it happen more than once.

In a way, it amused him. Not a proper outlet for anger, but still amusing.

This was a whole different kettle of fish.

He sighed and looked over at Iris. She still slept but looked a bit flushed. Maybe because she was buried under a blanket. On the small side table a plate held an untouched cheese Danish.

He’d keep an eye on her, too, in case she worsened.

But Lily? This had to be a person from her past, someone she never mentioned. Deciding he needed to question Jazz, he dozed too, confident in his ability to wake.

Sleep needed its due sometimes.
