When I felt the slap, I fought to lift my eyelids and focus.

“Do you know what she gave you?” The voice sounded like it came from the bottom of a well. “Jane, help us.”

Someone propped me up and held water to my lips. The liquid dribbled from my mouth and onto my blouse.

Sheriff Bergensen supported me with one strong arm and tilted water toward me again. “Do you know what she gave you?”

“Snake venom.” My words sounded slow and soft even to me. “In lip balm. She gave it to Steven too.”

“Load her up. Tell the hospital to have the antivenom waiting. Same poison discovered in Steven Grazer’s body. I’ll take Marta.”

Even with the screaming ambulance sirens, I drifted into a fitful slumber, the bumpy ride feeling like trampoline bounces on fluffy clouds.
