“How about this one?” Imelda held up a gown in midnight blue silk against her body and peered in the mirror. “No, it’s not me.” She tossed it aside and glanced at her maid. “Would you mind running the iron over the gold one? I think that’s my choice for tonight.”

“Of course, Miss.” The obedient girl carefully gathered the masses of fabric and left the room, shutting the door behind her.

“Where’s Willa?” Aurelia asked, from the depths of a large chair.

“Oh Willa? I think today is her day off,” answered Imelda absently. “And yes, I can actually manage to dress myself without her help, but don’t tell her that. Having been my maid since I was three, it’s difficult to convince her of that fact.”

Aurelia chuckled. “You’re very lucky to have her.”

“I know.”

“And you’re very lucky to have such a large collection of gowns.” Aurelia tried to keep the envy out of her voice as she surveyed the chaotic vision of several silk dresses lying higgledy-piggledy across Imelda’s bed.

“I know that too.” Her friend sighed. “But I’m not lucky enough to be engaged to an Earl. More’s the pity.”

Aurelia shrugged and started putting the dresses away. “I told you, I’m not sure it’s for real. We have to find Pip, Imelda. That is the most important thing for both of us right now. And somehow I have to get my borealiscope into a place where I can take lots of grafiks.”

“And pray you hit on something interesting?” Imelda sat on the end of her bed and looked at Aurelia. “That’s a rather loose plan, my dearest. It could take weeks, or even months, before you stumbled across anything.”

“I know, but what alternatives do we have? There seems to be nowhere to start. That borealiscope grafik is the only clue we have.”

“The one you believe belongs to the thieves?”

“Yes.” She nodded.

Silence fell while Imelda stood and put away her gowns, and Aurelia curled up on the chair in thought.

“What if,” Imelda suddenly turned to her. “What if you’re looking for the wrong thing?”

Aurelia blinked. “I don’t understand.”

“Well, how about looking for Pip instead? You have his colour, yes?”

Aware she was staring with her mouth open, Aurelia recovered herself and frowned. “Where on earth would we start looking for a stolen foal? That’s about as open ended as looking for the thieves.”

“Not necessarily,” Imelda offered. “Think about it. Thieves are people. People could be, and are, everywhere. But…” she held up her forefinger for emphasis, “horses have certain needs. A stable, food and grooms. That narrows it down from millions to less than…well, less, I’d say. Still a lot, but you have to admit…”

“It offers much better odds,” answered Aurelia slowly. “And Rowland would know where the best spots are for foals. Who has the ability to care for them.” She looked at Aurelia. “Pip has the bloodlines to be a champion. He isn’t just anywhere. He’s being cared for in luxury, I’ll wager.”

“Even better. You’re down to probably no more than a couple of hundred places.
