Natalia spent the rest of the morning relaxing in the library.

When the riders returned, most spread out to enjoy the other activities that Katherine had planned. Luncheon was held on the lawn in a picnic-style.

Everybody seemed to be enjoying themselves, which was a good omen for her cousin’s role as a hostess.

Natalia had taken a seat off to the side as was her custom, to blend in and not be the center of attention. Katherine and Eleanor joined her, and Natalia thought it would be like old times, chatting and laughing over silliness. Lord knows she needed something to distract her from thoughts of Tyson.

She glanced out over the guests, scanning each cluster of partygoers looking for Tyson again. She had not seen a glimpse of him since that morning, and she was curious as to where he was hiding. Her first thought had been that he was off somewhere with Alice, but Lady Montfrey was sitting quietly with a group of young ladies.

“Natalia, have you decided on a costume for the masquerade tomorrow evening?” Katherine asked.

Natalia blinked at her cousin as she quickly tried to recall the question and clear her mind of Tyson Campbell. After a few seconds, she smiled. “If I tell you, then what is the point of the masquerade?”

Katherine laughed and turned to Eleanor. “And you?”

Without thinking, Natalia snorted. “Juliet, right? And John as Romeo?” Her sister always wore the same costume saying it was just too romantic to pass up.

Eleanor frowned at Natalia. “Are you making fun of me?”

She shook her head. “No, sister. I was teasing you. Don’t be so wary.”

Her sister turned and looked across the lawn to where John was standing with a group of men, laughing and talking. Her eyes brimmed with tears.

“Eleanor?” Katherine called softly. “Is everything alright?”

She shrugged and sighed. Then after taking a breath, she gave them a weak smile. “Of course.”

Natalia knew her sister better than anybody and could see that she was not telling the truth. “Ellie,” she said in a low pressing voice. “What’s wrong?”

Eleanor sucked in a breath. “I thought the baby would bring us closer, but lately it seems that John is putting distance between us.”

“Whatever do you mean?” Katherine asked.

She glanced over at her husband, happy and cheerful so far away from her. “I woke up from a nap, and John wasn’t there. He had left me while I slept without a word.” She sniffled. “And why isn’t he over here with me instead of standing so far away?”

Natalia shot a glance at Katherine who was looking rather confused. “Eleanor, do you mean to tell me that you expect your husband to sit in your room while you take a nap?”

Her head snapped up in confusion. “What else is he to do?”

“Eleanor, the man dotes on you non-stop. You need to realize that he needs room to breathe.

There is nothing wrong with him taking a little bit of time for himself.”

She shook her head. “But that’s not the way we are. We do everything together.
