Chapter 41

Amber

Amber knew she’d been stupid getting separated from the group like this, but she’d been so angry. They wouldn’t surrender. They wouldn’t listen. The first incubus that had gone to his knees and raised his hands had been killed by the incubus standing next to him.

She slid to a stop by Tommy’s wolf as her own rushed past and attacked the last remaining incubus. Stupidly, she’d thought the incubus she’d chased down was alone. She’d managed to kill the two others with him, but being outnumbered and caught off guard, she hadn’t seen the final attack coming. Only heard the horrible yelp of pain. Smelled the blood. Tommy’s wolf had thrown himself in the path of the strike meant for her.

A loud shot cracked through the air and struck the incubus’s head. Ito stopped beside her. “Are you hurt?”

“Tommy’s wolf, not me.” She pulled back and found her shirt was drenched in blood. In Tommy’s blood. It smelled like him––the source didn’t matter, it was his––a scent she was too familiar with.

“Carry him. Keep moving.” Ito hovered between them and the door, but he couldn’t protect them indefinitely. She knew this logically, but her body was frozen. “Amber. Get up.”

The sharp command gave her the strength she needed. Grinding her teeth together, she scooped up the wolf’s horribly limp body and stood. He was alive. The heartbeat thrumming beneath her fingers was proof of that. Her wolf pressed against her right side and Ito against her left.

“Bet you never guessed you’d end up my bodyguard.” It was surreal to be walking along with him and trusting him with her life with no hesitation. She had no idea when she’d stopped hating him. Perhaps when he’d agreed to the truce. Maybe before even that.

Ito glanced at her with a furrowed brow. “No, I expected to end up killing you.”

“Awkward.”

He almost smiled but shook his head and moved into position at the door, a mask of concentration covering whatever amusement he might have felt. “Stay close.”

She didn’t argue. It was lucky that Tommy’s wolf had followed her and even luckier Ito had come, too. They crept back up the narrow staircase, pausing only briefly on the landing, before jogging down the hall. It was worryingly quiet all around them. The crack of gunfire had been almost constant since they’d approached the house and demanded surrender.

Her wolf moved in front of Ito, forcing both of them to stop, and focused on the hallway ahead of them. Someone is coming. Five or more.

She couldn’t fight with Tommy’s wolf in her arms like this. As gently as she could, she laid him down against the wall and swung her rifle back around to the front. The footsteps, barely audible, stopped.

“Hale, that you?” Velez shouted.

Relief flooded through her at the sound of his voice. “Yes!”

His wolf rounded the corner first, followed closely by Velez himself. “We’ve been looking for you. Glad to see Ito found you first.” He paused when he spotted Tommy’s wolf. “Alive?”

She nodded once.
