Chapter 7

Battered and Beaten. The Bitter Taste of Defeat. Worse Than Eating Your Vegetables!

Jodi was startled. One second, she was with her friends in Minecraft, gazing into the eerie blue fire and waiting for her brother to return.

The next second, she was back in the computer lab at Stonesword Library.

Theo tore off his VR goggles. “We’re back! It happened again.”

Jodi quickly looked to make sure that Morgan was with them. He was, although he didn’t look very happy about it. As he took off his goggles, he looked angry, and more than a little embarrassed.

“I…I failed,” he said, gripping his goggles tightly.

They all gasped. Even Jodi; she couldn’t help herself.

Her brother was the master of Minecraft. He never failed!

“I came close,” he said. “Really close! I could see the chest.”

“I’m sure you did your best, Morgan,” said Harper.

“I’ll bet it was epic,” said Po. “Did you go down swinging?”

“Yeah.” Morgan smiled a little. “Yeah, I didn’t give up without a fight.”

“Well, there’s some good news here,” said Theo. “We’ve never been defeated in this version of Minecraft before. I was afraid there would be real-world consequences.” He looked Morgan up and down. “But you seem to be okay. Do you feel all right?”

“I feel fine,” said Morgan. He stretched. “I feel normal. But being defeated…it hurt. I could feel every blow, even through the netherite armor.”

“And that’s the bad news,” said Theo. “You took all the best armor. And if this is working like Minecraft normally works, all your gear is now just lying there where you fell. It’s not going to do us any good.”

For a second, Jodi thought that Morgan would say he was sorry.

She thought that her brother might tell them what he’d seen, so that they could all learn from his defeat.

But Morgan obviously didn’t like the way Theo was talking to him. It sounded like Theo was blaming Morgan for wasting the golem’s loot.

So Morgan didn’t apologize. He yelled instead.

“The netherite armor wouldn’t help you! If I couldn’t win this challenge, none of you stand a chance. Armor isn’t going to change that.”
