It’s also advisable to light up as much of the surrounding area as possible to reduce the number of monsters that spawn come nightfall.

Locate any terrain dangers such as ravines and natural lava pools, and mark them with torches or other recognizable blocks so you’ll know when you’re coming back to a potentially dangerous area.

If you discover an NPC village, don’t be shy about using their resources—they’ll be only too happy to help. Interact with villagers to see what they’re willing to trade, help yourself to their crops and bookshelves and check out the contents of the blacksmith’s chest. In return for taking all their supplies, you can help these simple folk fortify their village. It’ll also reduce the chance of them being infected and turned into zombies, which will only add to your misfortunes. Build a wall around the village, light up any dark corners and, if they don’t already have one, craft an iron golem to stand guard.
