39) Screen Meditatio n

The following meditation can be used to inspire creativity and encourage focus for children. The short exercise can be performed whenever the day needs a little color. Instruct the participating children to sit with their legs crossed. Kids may also choose to lay down with their hands at their sides if the floor is clean or mats are available.

The Script:

I would like for you to close your eyes and take a few deep breaths with me. We are going to pull the air all the way into our stomachs as we inhale, holding it there while we count to three quietly. Listen to the sound of my voice and the noise the air makes as it travels through our throat and into your lungs.

Let us count as we breathe. One for the inhale and two for the exhale. Three as we breathe in again, and four as we breathe out. Five in and six out. Seven on the inhale and then eight on the exhale. Breathe-in to nine and breathe out to ten.

Now I would like you to imagine that you are sitting in a completely black room. Should you have any intrusive thoughts, accept them, and then return your attention to the darkened room. It is absolutely normal to become distracted, simply acknowledge, and rejoin.

The black room feels like nighttime, and it is entirely safe. There is nothing that can get you as you stand at the edge of the darkened room. Listen to the sound of my voice as your limbs are becoming heavier and heavier.

Wait, there is something in front of you. A large white square has just emerged from the darkness. It seems as though a screen has just turned on, directing before you. You watch as an image begins to appear through the haze.

What is appearing on your screen? What sounds do you hear coming from the images? Is it a film or a picture? What colors, so you see in your own unique vision?

Take a moment to observe the display in front of you. What do these images make you feel? Can you smell anything coming from the screen? Concentrate on your screen and absorb all of the details that lay before you.

You may now open your eyes. What do you think your imagination was trying to tell you? Take a moment to think about your answer before we continue with the day.

Note: To extend this activity, you may also have the children draw a representation of the images that played on their screen.
