Introduction

Body image is a multidimensional construct involving perceptual, cognitive, and affective aspects of one’s physical appearance (Cash & Smolak, 2011). Body image disturbance is associated with unhealthy eating and weight control behaviors and negative affect in nonclinical samples (Johnson & Wardle, 2005). Furthermore, body image disturbance is a risk factor and core feature of the development and maintenance of eating pathology (Jacobi, Hayward, de Zwaan, Kraemer, & Agras, 2004; Stice & Shaw, 2002), and, therefore, it is a significant target for clinical intervention and prevention. Acceptance-based mirror exposure treatment theoretically taps into the multidimensional perspective of body image and is the most empirically supported acceptance-based body image treatment. This chapter offers a theoretical explanation of acceptance-based mirror exposure and describes existing research testing this treatment in eating disordered and nonclinical samples of women. The chapter also briefly outlines existing research on other acceptance-based approaches and the overall limitations that need to be addressed in future research.
